I've said this several times now and it's a shame that it's becoming so repetitive – Murray is cursed to live in an era where two other giants bestride the game and one of them – Djokovic, seems to be taking tennis as a sport to a completely different level than we've ever seen before.
The destruction of Federer in the semi final was an awesome display of tennis. Some of the best I've ever seen. It's not that Federer was poor either, he just couldn't compete with the all round game that Djokovic has invented for himself.
Despite a horror show against Nishikori where he racked up an unheard of 100 errors the Serb has improved his game again since last year and it is going to take something dramatic to happen for Murray to end up victorious in the final.
It doesn't help either that Murray had an extended five sets in his semi final, finally defeating an opponent who was clearly nursing an injury towards the end. Raonic looked like he was going to take Murray out and the Canadian will be feeling a little unfortunate not to win.
Murray has made four Australian Open finals prior to this one and has been runner up three times to Djokovic and once to Federer – the likelihood is that this will be his fourth runners up spot.
There is no shame in that. Djokovic towers over the sport like a colossus and shows no sign of weakness or lethargy in his relentless pursuit of more tennis titles.
In the past I've backed Murray where the odds were just too good to refuse but at 4/1 there is no value there and so I'm looking elsewhere.
