Chelsea fans be careful what you wish for!
Liverpool fans are always being told by ex-players and managers how "knowledgeable" they are about the game but the simple truth is that their ardent support means they won't be hoodwinked into believing that something is more than what it appears to be on face value.
That is why Rafael Benitez is still revered by many on Merseyside because they know what a fantastic job he did for the club under exacting circumstances – the pair of Texan jokers who promised a spade in the ground and ended up being chased out of town empty handed because of their pure greed.
Benitez did more than just play with a pragmatic style and blend the sum of the parts into more than the whole. He also laid foundations for the future in the academy and look how that is starting to bear fruit. It is because of Benitez that the likes of Sterling, Ibe, Cody and many more are all pushing for a first team squad place and more.
I was one of those who would have welcomed Benitez back with open arms when Dalglish was dispensed with but the owners didn't see it that way and who can argue with their decision to date?
Jose Mourinho is 1/50 to be the next Chelsea Manager so clearly a lot of people think it's a done deal but before you welcome back the messiah you might like to consider the implications of financial fair play which are due to be introduced in 2015.
Mourinho has a three year shelf life. He's already admitted that much himself and it's generally accepted that he's not going to be the next Sir Alex Ferguson so what state is the Chelsea academy going to be in by the time Mourinho leaves in 2016?
Benitez has today moved on to Napoli so he is out of the running but looking at the other contenders it is difficult to find any outstanding candidate for this job or indeed who would be willing to put their neck on the chopping block when there are much easier ways of making a living for the top managers.
Roman Ambramovich is the man best placed to take the poisoned chalice at 200/1. He could fire himself every day and find eternal satisfaction.
