I'll say this for David Moyes – he has some balls. Dispensing with 30 years of backroom alchemy is not a decision to be taken lightly.

I'll say this for David Moyes – he has some balls. Dispensing with 30 years of backroom alchemy is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Shown the door at United were Mike Phelan, Ferguson's trusted assistant, Goalkeeping coach Eric Steele and first team coach Rene Meulensteen in a new broom sweeps clean move that shows how much faith Moyes' has in his own ability.

Or is it a cataclysmic error of judgement in burning bridges that could have come in useful in the future?

Certainly getting rid of Mike Phelan is the biggest call of all but when you are faced with following up a quarter century of success then I suppose you really have no choice but to go your own way and be damned all those who don't buy in to the new doctrine.

Having staff on the books with close friendships to the old gaffer could lead to resentment and ill feeling so it is a brave but necessary move by David Moyes to kick off the new regime with a clean slate.

The trouble with clean slates is that there is nothing written on them – just ask Alex Ferguson that one and remember how close the newly retired manager was to leaving United in the first couple of years of his long reign – and not on his own terms.

Moyes is going to have his work cut out at United because I don't believe the team he has inherited compares with previous title winning ones. They may have had a healthy points win but that has a lot to do with the paucity of the competition – Arsenal only came good in the second half of the season, Chelsea had how many managers and Liverpool were nowhere near challenging for honours.

City were torn apart by internal infighting which ultimately manifested itself in the FA Cup final when they all played as if they had just eaten a big plateful of spaghetti Bolognese and followed it up with cheesecake and ice cream.

If you think Moyes has what it takes then get on him winning the FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and Premier League – 1000/1 at Coral.
