A way back for Joe Cole?

Man of the Match – Joe Cole

Villain of the match – Stewart Downing

Moment of the match – Shelvey flick.

It's Groundhog day again.

If you haven't seen the film it is one of those worth catching on one of those Christmas evenings when there is nothing much going on and Uncle Ted is having difficulty keeping awake. It's fun for the whole family.

The premise of the film is that the news weatherman goes off for the fourth year running to some far flung town to cover a ridiculous story of a rat who is supposed to be able to tell the weather for the forthcoming duration.

Upon awakening in his hotel room the day after the event he is confronted by the fact that it is the same day – again, and again and again.

In fact every day he wakes up it is the same day and nothing changes. He resorts to killing himself to try and end the purgatory but still wakes up the next morning at 6am with the same music playing on the alarm clock and the same people doing exactly the same things.

It's a fun morality tale with Bill Murray in his finest screen performance and one of the most original films ever made.

Substitute Brendan Rodgers for Bill Murray and we have our very own Anfield Groundhog day. This movie is playing out live in front of us.

Twice Liverpool took the lead and squandered numerous opportunities to put the game out of reach and twice Young Boys levelled with stunning top drawer strikes out of nowhere – sound familiar?

Liverpool should have had this game in the bag long before Young Boys managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat with a 90th minute equaliser and they can only rue a host of missed opportunities.

Liverpool will now have to take a full strength team to Udinese which is the last thing needed for a small squad with four games in a ten day period and Rodgers will be hoping he finds the formula to escape from Groundhog day before arriving on Italian soil.

Stewart Downing was unfortunately abysmal. His crossing was awful and too often he managed to find the one player blocking the route to the big square patch of grass called the goal area.

The positives were Joe Cole who was superb after a very shaky start. So bad in fact that I thought the manager was going to substitute him after only 30 minutes but it was Wisdom who had to come off due to a twinge with Henderson filling in at right back.

Shelvey was outstanding again and Assaidi had a good game but could swap notes with Raheem Sterling who is picking the better option more and more frequently.

A very good performance saw Liverpool have the lions share of possession, squander many opportunities to put the game out of reach and leak two goals to what seemed like the only shots on target from the opposing team.

How many more times can we cut and paste the last paragraph?
