Another fine mess you got me into...

Man of the match: Benteke

Villain of the match: FSG

Moment of the match: Back heel for Villa's second goal.

Ever since Liverpool made a "statement" by refusing to pay over the odds to bring a striker (or two) into the club with the summer transfer window rapidly closing a result like this has been on the cards.

Shocking? No.

Ever since Liverpool made a "statement" by refusing to pay over the odds to bring a striker (or two) into the club with the summer transfer window rapidly closing a result like this has been on the cards.

Shocking? No.

Just read any random preview from the liverpool blog this season and you'll see the same theme repeated ad nauseam.

From the Everton v Liverpool preview:

"A toothless attack bereft of deadly marksmanship is stifling the growth of this team and until that issue is resolved Liverpool are going to continue to play good football and struggle to win games because they simply don't have the firepower of an in form Owen, Fowler or Rush.

Last night against a decent Anzhi team Liverpool bossed the game but had the frustratingly erratic Suarez and the inexperienced Assiaidi providing a far less than devastating attack."

This wasn't a shock at all; in fact it just shows exactly how sport at the highest level has no hiding place for those who come up short. Any deficiencies in technique are cruelly exposed, amplified and laid out bare for all to see.

What was once a fortress has had the moat filled in with sand and the gate left wide open. Repelling the invaders is a job that has been left to midfielders playing in attack and this result, if they hadn't already come to the same conclusion, should leave FSG in no doubt at all of the error of their ways.

But let's not be churlish here. Villa were superb and when you can score three goals from four shots on target the job of storming the ramparts is made all that much easier for you.

Benteke was everything you would want from an away striker and Weimann ran himself into the ground to keep Villa's counter attacking tactics alive and well. Villa deserve this win let there be no doubt about that and we are light years away from Robbie Fowler scoring the fastest Premier league hat trick against the same opponents on the same ground.

Liverpool huff and puff and claim sixty percent of the possession and two thirds as many attempts on goal. But that is all they are – attempts, and some of them pretty woeful ones at that.

This Liverpool team is crying out for strikers worthy of the name and until they sort out that mess, hopefully sooner rather than later, Liverpool will be looking down the table at how far away they are from the relegation places instead of how close they are to fourth spot. Never mind any better than that.

This result is not a wakeup call and nor is it a case for Rodgers to make wholesale changes. If you can't score and take at least 25% of your chances then how can you hope to win?

We all knew this was going to happen as soon as the transfer window closed and we realised the enormity of what had just happened: that we had just given away an England striker on loan in exchange for thin air.

On that basis Damien Comolli can be forgiven for thinking he was hard done by and having a whinge in the red tops.

Fortress Anfield?

Digging all that sand out of the moat is going to be a long job until the square pegs are replaced with round holes.
