From the moment Leeds United drew Chelsea in the Capital One Cup quarter-final, both sets of supporters were excited about what the evening might have in store. These two have somewhat of a rivalry and with this match being played at Elland Road, it makes for a superb cup tie.
The tournament is certainly there for the taking this year, even for Leeds, who currently ply their trade in the second tier of English football. This is because Swansea City and Aston Villa are the two representatives from the Premier League at the moment – two teams that are very strong – but beatable. Also, League Two Bradford City have shocked everyone and made it into the semi-final draw.
Chelsea know they are now not only the favourites for this tie on Wednesday evening, but to go on and lift the trophy in the New Year. Rafael Benitez has the chance to give supporters something to cheer about and maybe get them on his side.
He will not be thinking of a nice trip to Wembley just yet though, as Leeds are more than capable of causing an upset here. In truth, if there is one place you want to avoid in a big cup match, it is Elland Road. The atmosphere will be electric, the team will be pumped and the Yorkshire side are no strangers to knocking out Premier League opponents.
It might be interesting to see how some of the summer signings fair on a cold, intimidating night in South Yorkshire. If Benitez picks a strong eleven though and they all stick to their jobs, then Chelsea should run out comfortable winners. Any complacency will be punished though. What the Spaniard does not need is a defeat against a Championship side right now – he is not a popular man at Stamford Bridge as it is.
Neil Warnock will be urging his men to get in their opponents faces right from the off and make it a difficult evening for them. They can play some fantastic football as well and if the service is right for Luciano Bechio, you can expect him to stick the ball in the back of the net.
Thousands will make the journey from West London and will be expecting their side to reach the final four with not much drama. It has the makings of being a quite thrilling cup tie that is not one to be missed. We have seen some entertainment in the Capital One Cup this season and this is sure to be no exception.
So we think Chelsea will win but the League Cup just has a habit of throwing up nasty surprises and a penalty shoot out is the way these stories normally end.
Leeds are 16/1 with Coral to win this game and Chelsea 10/1 to win 2-0 so the bookies are clearly confident of a Chelsea victory.
They don't like it up 'em though and a cold frosty night in north Yorkshire is just the ticket to make the likes of Torres wish for the Spanish beaches and a pina colada.
Leeds are 7/2 to win this game and remember correct score forecasts are only valid for the 90 minutes so to win the game is the way to go.
