Lightweight Liverpool continue goal drought.

What's worse than strikers continually hitting the woodwork?

Having no strikers at all or watching the midfielders long range efforts continually miss the target?

This is going to be a painful transition time for Reds fans and the fact of the matter is that being linked with "free agents" such as Michael Owen shows how the bottom of the barrel is being scraped so very hard.

It is one thing to refuse to pay over the odds for a defender or for a midfielder for there is a plentiful supply line of those types of players. But players who can score goals AND have the tag of "striker" are a rare commodity.

John H Henry has bitten off his nose to spite his face. He has gone from sanctioning £35 million on deadline day eighteen months ago for a striker who looked promising to refusing to overpay for a tried and tested premier league football player.

Dempsey may not have been the full answer to Liverpool's goal scoring woes but he would have been a welcome addition to a young and talented but goal shy squad.

Rodgers now has some serious flaws in his squad that he cannot overcome by training and coaching alone.

Suarez is not an out and out goal scorer. Fantastic player yes but his goals to shots ratio is not going to win him the golden boot in his career unless he rectifies his current wastefulness in front of goal.

Borini looks like a player in the making but as in all transfer windows there are always players who take longer to settle than others and Borini doesn't look like setting Anfield alight anytime soon.

Sterling is clearly a talent in the making and Joe Allen also but these are not marksmen of deadly ability and Liverpool are going to finish in the bottom half of the table before they get a chance to rectify the situation in January.

Painful as it may be you only need to look to Old Trafford and Sir Alex Ferguson for the answer to the puzzle.

Paying £24 Million pounds for a 29 year old striker is already reaping its rewards.

Van Persie is a proven goal scorer who will find the net time and time again. With Scholes providing the ammunition from midfield Van Persie single handedly overturned a 2-1 deficit and gave United a barely deserved 3-2 victory away from home against Southampton.

Ferguson understands the value in unerring accuracy. United have always paid top dollar for top striking ability and Liverpool have been left with egg on their faces.

The blame lies fairly and squarely on the shoulders of John Henry.

It was he who appointed a director of football to make sure no transfer disasters happened and then sacked him after he spent all the money.

£35 Million spent on Carroll does not look such a bad outlay when you consider the age difference between the Geordie and the Dutchman. If you have to work within financial constraints then you sometimes need to sacrifice or compromise your philosophy to accommodate that straight jacket.

Letting Andy Carroll go was foolishness of the highest order. The only redeeming factor being that he has gone on loan and can be recalled in January. His goal tally last season was not good but every man and his dog could see that the player was improving with every game and in the league game against Chelsea after the cup final he was unplayable.

To be successful you need to be able to score goals. It is not rocket science.

Fowler, Rush; Owen; Aldridge; Dalglish; Keegan; Toshack; Torres. All of these players could thread the eye of a needle and whilst Dalglish as a manager clearly had his flaws in his second coming by continually playing players who were not performing he recognised goal scoring talent when he saw it and was prepared to pay over the odds for it.

This is going to be like watching a road crash in slow motion. The damage has already been done but the flashbacks will be vivid week after week to come.

Brendan Rodgers is undoubtedly the man for the job but his inexperience has cost dearly and the owner's failure to grasp the nettle when needed has left the club without the means to challenge for the Champions league places – again.

If Michael Owen is the answer – what is the question?
