So hands up all the non Irish readers who expect England to win this game comfortably?

I thought so. Put your hands down now you are blocking out the light.

The football season has ended.

But wait it hasn't has it. On top of finishing the domestic season with a play off final instead of the FA Cup final and just days after the Champions League final we are back to Wembley once again for another meaningless friendly.

At the end of a long and arduous campaign it is the Chelsea players who have been picked for this squad who are are entitled to feel most aggrieved that they can't take off for a well earned break just yet.

On top of the near 70 matches they played this season now they have another game to contend with. This is madness.

Well paid or not top Premier League footballers need a rest and recuperation period and after just playing Man City in a couple of money raising "brand exercises" Chelsea players are now burning the candle at both ends and directly through the middle.

I'd much prefer those players in contention for an England place go off and get some rest before coming back to the treadmill in September but it's not going to happen any time soon and with a World Cup to be played next summer being a modern day footballer pretty much means playing every single week of the year.

Frank Lampard and Daniel Sturridge are the favourites to get on the scoresheet – Sturridge is the in form striker with six goals in his last five games and he is also fresh as a daisy so he is your best bet for an anytime goal scorer.

Steven Gerrard is out injured – leaving Wayne Rooney as the most likely England captain.

England are 1/2 favourites to win this game and you should get those odds whichever bookie you are using but if you fancy a change then it's definitely well worth taking up the 3 x £10 free bet offer at Ladbrokes if you haven't done so already for this game.

Daniel Sturridge anytime goal scorer 13/8 at Ladbrokes
