Captain Cook!England go into the 2nd Test against India knowing that they have to improve their overall team performance – particularly in the opening couple of days. In the 1st Test, a horrific showing with the bat in their 1st innings cost them and the same fate cannot be repeated.

1-0 down with three matches to play is not a desperate situation and playing in India is always tough, but Alastair Cook's men need to respond straight away. They don't even have to win the 2nd Test – a draw would show progression and keep them in the hunt for a positive series.

1-0 down with three matches to play is not a desperate situation and playing in India is always tough, but Alastair Cook's men need to respond straight away. They don't even have to win the 2nd Test – a draw would show progression and keep them in the hunt for a positive series.

Looking back at the 1st Test, England can look back at a poor batting display for the reason they lost so comfortably. India were positive and strong to make 521-8, England were negative and weak to make 191 in response.

As is often the case, the tourists showed more steel when following on, but it was largely down to two men – Captain Cook and Matt Prior. The former made 176, while England's wicket-keeper saw his resilience ended on 91 from 225 balls.

There wasn't enough help from elsewhere though. The middle order was poor and Nick Compton was the only other player to make above 30. It is all very well two players turning up – England need five or six to compete.

Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen have been described as the best players England have at times. They need to start showing it. 36 runs between them in the 1st Test is simply not good enough, but they will both keep their place.

The man to miss out in terms of the disappointing middle order is Ian Bell who has flown back home to be at the birth of his first child. This means Jonny Bairstow is likely to come in and he should add freshness to the batting line-up. Hopefully he will play with the freedom that has seen him recognised by England.

There is a chance for more changes too. Monty Panesar could come in to help out England's shining light with the ball – Graeme Swann. Tim Bresnan could be the man to make way, although Stuart Broad – who often struggles overseas – is also in danger of being dropped.

The facts are simple when it comes to this 2nd Test. India are more used to the conditions. India are favourites to win the match. England have been poorer in all areas during 2012 and need to massively raise their game.

To give themselves even the slightest chance, they need to pick the right team and put in a good showing first up with the bat.

Not too much to ask is it?
