Confidence can be a wonderful thing but over confidence can be the worst. Alan Pardew seems to be lurching into the latter category and the free fall that Crystal palace have found themselves in since Christmas is quite an astonishing turn around from the first half of the season.

Since boxing day Palace have managed to gain a woeful four points and in the same period Aston Villa have managed nine. That is how bad they have been.

When asked in interview Pardew displayed a disarmingly frank assessment of his position. Was he under pressure? “No”, Did he fear for his job? “No”.

I'd suggest he is living in dreamland if he thinks this run of results can continue and he keeps his job.

Liverpool by contrast have been infuriatingly inconsistent. One game they are able to destroy Man City and the next they lose to Crystal Palace. This game will give Liverpool the opportunity to show that they have indeed progressed under Klopp having beaten Manchester City again mid week.

Despite a distinctly average season Liverpool find themselves only six points away from the Champions league qualification places and that is a measure of how poorly the other teams around them have performed.

With Sturridge back in the team and backed by Coutinho and Firminho this is a different Liverpool side to the one that surrendered so meekly to Palace at Anfield and I fully expect them to win this game.
