One step forwards two steps back.

Any hope of reaching the promised land of the Champions league was extinguished by a vibrant Southampton team who pressed Liverpool off the ball and gave the biggest crowd attendance of the season at the new Saint Mary’s plenty to cheer about.

Anyone who expected Southampton to self-implode (myself included) and drop spectacularly like a stone to the foot of the Premiership after sacking Nigel Adkins have been shown that there must have been deeper underlying reasons for that dismissal and Southampton certainly rose to this occasion.

Liverpool’s defence parted like the Red Sea for two of the Saints goals and it looks as though this is the beginning of the end for Martin Skrtel who has been found wanting for most of this season with several rickets – most notably the gifted back pass in the match against Man City.

In this game several players ghosted past the statuesque defender and defensive replacements are going to be required in the summer to shore up a failing back line.

The retirement of stalwart Jamie Carragher will hopefully be met by a fit again Martin Kelly next season. This lad is class and a future England right back so money can be spent in strengthening other key defensive positions.

At the moment Liverpool are just like a leaky bucket that springs new holes as fast as the bucket fills up. The striker problems have been resolved, although there is still room for improvement here but now the defence has decided to start leaking at a very inopportune time of the season.

Brendan Rodgers must be exasperated at the ease with which Southampton waltzed through the centre of the defence for the third goal and his scouting network will be getting the gee up this week.

Southampton though were magnificent and fully deserved their win. On this performance they will extend their stay in the top flight for another season at least.
