They huffed and they puffed but they couldn’t blow the house down.

Just as I predicted in this weeks football accumulator Liverpool managed to find the only magic Top Hat that was rabbitless and were left with another measly point to show for their efforts.

Watching this game for the first ten minutes I was amazed that the Reds couldn’t find the back of the net but that amazement turned to wonder as even the Russian commentator couldn’t believe how many opportunities were squandered.

For once I managed to find a decent stream that didn’t keep freezing but this was no showcase for Premier League football and I turned it off ten minutes before the end to catch up on Soccer Saturday.

Repeatedly the Reds managed to find the post, a marginal offside decision or watch their shot pass just shy of the far post.

It was so bizarre that even the feeling that this was going to turn into “one of those games” was rubbed out as Reading spurned a golden opportunity to take all three points in the dying minutes of the match.

As I stared mournfully at this weeks accumulator with Everton two goals to the good against QPR how I wished I had swapped that game for this one.

No matter. The fact of the matter is that Liverpool were desperately unlucky in this game and any other day this could have finished four or five nil. This is not a repeat of last years “unluckiness”. It is simply a wonderful backs to the wall defensive job by Reading and they should be congratulated for the shut out.

Their keeper had the game of his life and will go to bed tonight grinning from ear to ear. It’s just amazing how often Liverpool seem to bring the best out of an opposition goalie.

Any hope we had of snatching a Champions League place has now gone and so the manager can concentrate on trying to keep the players he wants for next season without that distraction cropping up in contract talks.

Quite how Liverpool managed to snatch a draw from this game when they had so many scoring opportunities is the fix that the manager needs to make for next season. The problems have gone from off the pitch (those damn Texans), to having a very poor run of luck starting with beachballgate against Sunderland.

The defence has been shaky. Skrtel dropped and replaced by Carragher has sorted that out.

Henderson has improved immeasurably. Ditto Downing. Sturridge fits in well, Coutinho shows flashes of brilliance and his “offside” goal today was still technically gifted wherever the defensive line may of stood.

But still the sum of the parts is not greater than the whole and that is something that Sir Alex manages to achieve with regular consistency.

Quite how he does it I’ll never know because honestly I don’t rate the players he has at his disposal as being fantastically better than what we have. It’s just that when they come together they manage to play the music note for note whereas we can’t seem to follow the conductor properly.

People talk about fine margins in winning and losing and it’s so true. Maybe we need to replace the baton.
