You are only as good as your last Gig.

Whoever is doing the hiring and firing at Stoke City these days has clearly missed that one liner.

Tony Pulis did a great job at Stoke keeping them in the Premiership but their playing style was not to everyone's taste.

More to the point it would be fair to say that their playing style was not to anyone's taste.

They are – or were a bunch of cloggers.

That is presumably why the Stoke hierarchy want to press for a change of playing style.

But is Mark Hughes really the answer?

Martin O'Neill would have been a better choice. Sure Sunderland were playing with less passion towards the end of his tenure but the summer transfer window would have sorted that out. O'Neill was once feted as the successor to Alex Ferguson in his Aston Villa days if anyone cares to remember.

Hughes bought a bunch of journeymen to Fulham and jumped ship when he thought his managerial abilities deserved a bigger stage – but when the bigger clubs failed to come a calling he was left kicking his heels until QPR were looking for someone to get them out of relegation trouble.

This he did on the last day of the 2012 season but despite a massive summer transfer spend he made so many mistakes that even Harry Redknapp could not subsequently save QPR from relegation when called into the fire fight which tells you everything you need to know right there.

I think Hughes will struggle to do any better than Pulis and as for changing the playing style – that is a massive job at Stoke.

If Hughes did not think Fulham was good enough for him then pitching up at Stoke must be a bitter pill to swallow.

Sometimes you just have to fuck your principles to get the next Gig.
