One of the most intense rivalries in the history of sport takes place on Sunday as Manchester United welcome (not sure if that is the right word!) Liverpool to Old Trafford for what is always one of the most eagerly anticipated matches of the season.

No matter where these two teams are in the table – and it has to be said that I can’t recall Liverpool being above United going into this fixture – it is always a game that throws up controversy, not least because of the passionate support of the home crowd and I’m being polite there.

Too often in the past Liverpool have managed to handicap themselves by carrying over the inspiring team talk into overzealous tackles in the opening minutes and have been reduced to ten men early on.

I don’t see that happening with this team though. Brendan Rodgers has instilled a sense of discipline that sees the Reds top of the fair play league and with Gerrard in his “quarterback” role I don’t see him lunging rashly into challenges and getting sent off.

Likewise Suarez has reined it in and the only loose cannon is Skrtel who continues to dice horribly with chance with his constant shirt pulling and holding. This is not rugby man!

Conversely United are at the wrong end of the table where discipline is concerned and let’s hope we can induce some more Rooney grass thumping on Sunday.

Liverpool welcome Lucas back into the squad after another injury although I think he will be confined to the bench and Rodgers has some tough decisions to make in midfield where the game will be won or lost.

Sturridge and Suarez have to start. With their prolific partnership worrying City and Chelsea in their away games and tearing Arsenal a new one at Anfield, this is a strike force that would have any team on the planet worried.

Mignolet picks himself and it is hard to see how the manager can shake up the defence really. With Toure having made several costly mistakes it will probably mean a central partnership of Agger and Skrtel with Flanagan deservedly bagging the right back spot.

With Enrique still out injured Johnson will start at right back again ahead of Cissokho and Gerrard will play just in front of the back four.

So that leaves three spots in midfield to choose from Sterling, Coutinho, Joe Allen and Jordan Henderson.

I would go with Sterling who deservedly took man of the match for England on his last outing along with Allen and Henderson. United’s midfield is their weak spot at the moment and we should try to win that battle from the start. It’s tough on Coutinho but he continues to have the odd poor game here and there which counts against him for this one.

A draw would be good. I know Reds fans will slate me for not putting money on the Liverpool win but a draw would be a good result for both teams and those 4-1 away wins are a rarity indeed.

Besides with Liverpool’s tendency to self-destruct at the back it’s likely that Van Persie or Rooney will score so your alternative bet is a “both teams to score” wager.

£10 wins £28.75 if this game ends in a draw.
