The same old frailties returned as Liverpool contrived to make a spectacle of themselves against Notts County.

Cruising two goals to the good courtesy of strikes from Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge and with 75% of the possession Liverpool squandered a series of gilt-edged chances and managed to let in two goals in the second half from poor set piece defending.

Not only did this game go into needless extra time sapping the energy of those players who will be desperately required to perform at the top of their ability against Manchester United on Sunday but more tellingly three players were lost to injury, crucially Kolo Toure who will be badly missed on Sunday if he does not recover from what appears to be a serious groin strain.

Brendan Rodgers played a near full strength side for this capital one game but of the three players that had the chance to impress the manager, Sissoko limped out after four minutes with an injury, whilst both Jordan Ibe and Raheem Sterling failed to grasp the nettle running into dead ends and misplacing passes left right and centre.

Quite how Liverpool got themselves into this mess is a familiar story – if there was a Trophy for the amount of times you could hit the post and crossbar in the season then Liverpool would walk away with it.

It is quite clear that Brendan Rodgers still has work to do in the transfer market and it is a shame that so far the identified targets have chosen to move elsewhere.

Unless the Reds stop being so wasteful in front of goal we are going to be in for another season of near misses and unfulfilled expectation.
