What a cracking game that was!

Fantastic goals from both Henderson and Shelvey sandwiched by some calamitous Liverpool defending and that accident waiting to happen finally happened when Skrtel kicked out and gave away a penalty.

Breathless, frantic stuff and this is probably the reason Liverpool won’t win the title this season – leaking three goals against relegation threatened Swansea is not in the DNA of a title winning team.

Let’s not spoil things though by moaning about the defensive errors. The goals scored by Henderson and Shelvey were right out of the top drawer and after continually blazing over the bar for what seems like an eternity Henderson finally arrowed one into the top left and what a beauty it was.

If that was a good effort, Shelvey’s was even more spectacular, hitting a first time shot from 22 yards which curled beautifully into the top right and was rightfully applauded by the home fans in the Kop end.

From seemingly cruising at 2-0 Liverpool managed to give away a second goal to even things up at 2-2 before a delightful chipped pass from Suarez found Sturridge barely three yards out and he nodded home in style to send Liverpool into the break 3-2 up.

Soon after the restart Skrtel was again the villain pulling down Bony in the box and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty to Swansea which Bony duly converted.

All square at 3-3 then and the frenetic midfield battle was being won by Swansea. Rodgers responded by substituting Sterling for Joe Allen in an attempt to get a foothold in the middle of the park.

Liverpool’s’ clownish defending continued throughout the second half when Johnson presented the ball to the Swansea attack who failed to take advantage but it looked like the parting of the red sea every time Swansea came forward.

As the crowd started to show their nervous disposition on 73 minutes Gerrard played a superb slide rule pass to Suarez whose shot cannoned off a defender into the path of Henderson who shot straight at the keeper but buried the rebound to keep the reds champion’s league qualification hopes alive.

And what of Luis Suarez?

Probably his poorest game in a red shirt that I can remember and he’s not helped by his strike partners continued selfishness in front of goal. That would explain the manager’s substitution of Sturridge on 79 minutes because there can be no other reason I could think of to take off your main strike threat.

Rodgers is going to have his work cut out trying to rectify the problems he has in central defence. Skrtel gave away the penalty that has been a long time coming and his mistakes are beginning to take the shine off what was a fantastic recent resurgence in form.

Agger was clearly struggling for fitness and his replacement Toure looked like a bag of nerves any time the ball came near him. Add to that Johnson’s casual attitude to possession and it doesn’t take a brain surgeon to see why they are leaking so many goals.

Still, a welcome three points and scoring four goals with an off colour Suarez is an improvement to be welcomed.
