Man of the match: Luis Suarez

Moment of the match: Sturridge rifles into the far corner.

Moan of the match:Reds are yet to put in a decent second half display.

The sight of Luis Suarez parading his 10-day-old baby Benjamin on the pitch pre-kick-off left Liverpool fans scratching their heads in puzzlement.

What were we to make of the new family man image?

For all of the brickbats thrown at Suarez over his posturing to try and engineer a move away from Anfield over the summer, football fans will quickly forgive past transgressions in return for the currency that every supporter craves – goals.

What were we to make of the new family man image?

For all of the brickbats thrown at Suarez over his posturing to try and engineer a move away from Anfield over the summer, football fans will quickly forgive past transgressions in return for the currency that every supporter craves – goals.

Since his return, Liverpool have suddenly scored more league goals in two games than in the previous five put together and however you feel about him, on the pitch the guy is a genius and for that reason Liverpool fans will quickly forget his past misdemeanours.

Of course I was one of those supporters who wanted the player gone at the end of last season but it turns out I am just as much a hypocrite as the next fan. Breathing the rarefied air close to the summit of the Premier league table is intoxicating and the promise of a return to champions league football is a distinct possibility.

Paradoxically it is only because Liverpool are not distracted by Thursday night Europa cup fixtures that they are able to play their strongest squad every Saturday – which is just as well because the bench is full of players that could be sent on loan at a moments notice.

The current squad would not cope with playing twice a week – just ask Spurs about that one.

The Palace players started by doing a rabbit in the headlights impression and suffered from horrible stage fright. Even Ian Holloway, the Palace manager, got carried away with the atmosphere and joined in with singing the famous Liverpool anthem before the game kicked off.

At half-time and leading three nil the home fans were warming their hands in anticipation of the rout to come, but it never materialised as Liverpool took their foot off the gas pedal and Palace raised their game to at least make a second-half contest of the match.

The contrast with last season for Liverpool is quite stark and this season they are turning their domination of the game into goals which shows just what a calamity the Andy Carroll fiasco was in the previous transfer window leaving the Reds with minimal firepower.

In addition the last two 3-1 victories have been achieved without hitting the heights that this team promises and we have yet to see a second-half display of any merit which will be cause for concern for the manager.

Jordan Henderson pushes Luis Suarez very close for man of the match but he won’t get that accolade until he finds his shooting boots. He has the energy of a Duracell bunny and he has improved massively since just last season but you can’t keep raw talent down and Suarez gets the gong.
