For all those of us who thought horror shows like this were a thing of the past this was a timely reminder that rebuilding under Brendan Rodgers still has a long, long way to go.
For some reason, and inexplicably to the untrained observer, Rodgers picked four centre backs across the backline and chose to leave Enrique on the bench, introducing him in the second half when Liverpool were chasing the game.

Once again Liverpool gave up a goal to set piece, once again, it was one of the very few chances that the opposition had on the reds goal and once again. Liverpool failed to make any impression at all on a determined and organised Southampton defence.
Hopefully any title talk has now been banished to where it belongs because it is clear that this squad still is several players short of the full complement and the missing Coutinho due to injury and Suarez due to his cannibalistic attack were both badly missed here.
In fact, the less said about this game the better, as it was a throwback to the worst games of last season, but in a sense it was even worse than that, as we didn’t even need the opposition goalie to play the game of his life to keep a clean sheet.
The only positive to come out of this game is that Suarez has now served his 10 game ban and will bring some welcome firepower to the Reds attack.
Next up, Manchester United away in the Capital One Cup.
