There was a time in the not too distant past when going a goal behind early in the game meant watching a Liverpool team toil through the remaining 80 minutes to try and redress the balance, never mind the two goals required to take the points.
These days though going a goal down doesn’t sink the heart quite so low as it used to and with good reason – the firepower Liverpool possess is bocoming an unstoppable force. Cardiff becoming the latest victims to feel the full force of Liverpool’s title charge.
Cardiff might be left to ponder how they managed to score three goals at home and still lose the game by three more but Liverpool were very good and the understanding between Sturridge and Suarez seems to get better with every game. Sturridge’s back heel to set up Suarez was the moment of the match.
The unsung hero though is Jordan Henderson. Whatever the manager puts in his pre match breakfast I want some because this kid is just getting better and better. His slide rule pass to put Johnson clean through was perfectly weighted and he is well within his rights to wear a contended smile when he sees Sir Alex Ferguson’s face look like it is set in stone after another United defeat.
Let’s not forget that Ferguson made some horrible rickets in his time as United manager and it wasn’t all a bed of roses. Sebastian Veron anyone?
The only quibble you can have with Henderson’s game is that he still continually manages to blaze over the bar. However with his all-round progress it would be churlish to harp on about that one defect in his game when everything else has improved so dramatically.
Liverpool are the team to watch at the moment and with a blend of youth and experience that is yielding fantastic results. They are 11/4 to win the Premier league - £10 wins £37.50 and with five of their last eight games being at home and with both Chelsea and City yet to visit could this yet be the season that sees Steven Gerrard finally get his hands on the one trophy that has eluded his illustrious career?
I’ll be watching tomorrow night’s game and rooting for United. Can they do us a favour and beat Manchester City?
