British Welterweight Championship defence.
The first Frank Warren promotion of 2013 sees the British Welterweight champion Frankie Gavin (14-0) take on aspiring professional Jason Welborn (11-1) in a warm up for Gavin's emergence onto the European boxing circuit.
The fight is live on Boxnation 18th January 2013.
The bookies have Gavin as a 1/25 stonewall favourite for the bout in the Walsall arena and having watched some YouTube footage of Welborn I don't think there is any value in backing him at best odds of 10/1 Bet365
Welborn is an immobile strong fighter who will come at Gavin trying to pressure him into mistakes and has taken six weeks off work to go to training camp and try and make the breakthrough to a professional career.
Unbeaten in five years and with his only defeat in 2006, Welborn is going to be a tough proposition and will not roll over easily but his technique looks suspect in too many areas to be a real threat and I expect Gavin to win this fight easily.
The only chance Welborn has of winning this fight is to take Gavin out early with a barrage of shots and hope one finds the mark but the Welterweight champion is too canny for that and a good mover he will be able to quickly get out of any trouble.
Expect Gavin to start piling on the advantage from round three and make his superior fitness and technique pay from then on.
