Anthony Joshua V Gary Cornish Boxing Betting Tips

After bigging up David Price several years ago when he burst on to the professional boxing scene I'm wary of pronouncing anyone to be “the next big thing” but Anthony Joshua is definitely that. There is no doubt about it.

Not one of the Londoner's professional wins have lasted longer than three rounds and whilst Gary Cornish is going to be his strongest opponent yet he's not going to have a chance of stopping the one man destruction derby.

Scotsman Cornish is fighting Joshua for the vacant Commonwealth heavyweight title and he's talking the talk threatening to dispatch Joshua early doors but it's a lot of hot air I'm afraid. Joshua is no David Price.

For a start physically he is an imposing athlete. At 1.98 metres tall he weighs in at 106kg and he is only 25 – 22 when he won Olympic boxing gold in the heavyweight division in 2012.

Olympic medals aren't necessarily a measure of a boxers mentality though. Just witness the professional career of Audley Harrison but thirteen wins from thirteen mark out Joshua as “a bit special”.

Eddie Hearn is Joshua's promoter and he feels that his man is going to be ready for a world title shot next year. That would definitely be early in any boxers career but Joshua has the tools and the ammunition to make it a reality.

If Tyson Fury could defy all the odds and beat Klitschko next month then it would set up the possibility of one of the biggest British heavyweight title fights of all time.

Fortunately for Joshua though Fury stands next to no chance of beating Klitschko and he will be able to continue his learning path without that side circus of distraction. There are plenty of heavyweights that will provide him with sterner tests as he learns the craft of the professional boxer.

As for Gary Cornish – he is undefeated in 21 fights, has a slight height advantage and weighs in 9kg heavier although he doesn't possess the physical conditioning of Joshua.

That's where the good news stops for those thinking of backing him though. Nine wins have come by way of TKO and just one by KO. Nine have been won by points decision and two retirements make up the unbeaten record.

Contrast that with nine TKO and four KO for Joshua in his first thirteen and you can see why he he is the bookies favourite by a big margin to win this contest.
